Bingo hall, casino merge

AKWESASNE — The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has merged the Mohawk Bingo Palace and Akwesasne Mohawk Casino as part of a $75 million expansion project.

Called the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, the complex off Route 37 features more than 2,000 slots and video-gaming machines on 130,000 square feet of gaming floor.

The resort also features a new 150-suite hotel and the Sweetgrass Spa, convention and meeting space, assorted table games, a live poker room, the Cascades Lounge with live entertainment and four restaurants, including the Native Harvest Buffet and Maple Room Steak House.

“This property will be an all-inclusive resort with the addition of the Mohawk Bingo Palace,” Casino General Manager Patrick Bassney said in a news release.

The Bingo Palace opened more than 25 years ago, and with its parking-lot lease up in 2012 and the building beginning to deteriorate, tribal officials decided it was cheaper to move the operation to the casino a few miles away.

The new site has 540 seats for bingo players and a new interactive game on Saturdays, Cosmic Bingo, with blacklight, music and florescent cards and ink.

Between each bingo game, the crowd participates in trivia questions and games.

The first session is Greener than Green, set for this Saturday to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

“The staff at the casino has been great and very welcoming to us,” Bingo Palace Manager Brenda Johnston said in a press release.

“I see our programs getting even more exciting, especially with the addition of Cosmic Bingo. I expect our guests will really like the transition.”
