KEESEVILLE — Adirondack Hardware’s renovated home-heating display gives customers a variety of choices.
Owner Roger Long Jr. said they renovated that part of the store earlier this year to create home-oriented displays.
“It used to just be a display rack. It was hard for a customer to imagine how it would look in the home,” Long said.
The display area features a hot-air furnace, pellet stove, both kerosene and liquid propane or natural gas direct-vent heaters and a wood stove.
Rising fuel prices continue to be an issue for North Country residents, he said. Long said liquid propane and natural gas units have become more popular because the price for those fuels are not as volatile.
Many are also switching to wood stoves, with customers willing to put in the labor in order to save money, he said. Wood pellets are an alternative for people who don’t have access to wood.
Long said they are selling pellets for $239 a ton at the moment. He said one ton of pellets provides about the same amount of heat as 115 gallons of fuel oil, which sells for more than $4 a gallon.
He said they have also hired Brian LaFountain as their in-house heating specialist.
Adirondack Hardware carries outdoor wood boilers by Central Boiler, wood stoves, pellet stoves, hot-air furnaces, combination wood/propane furnaces, combination heating and air-conditioning units, direct-vent fireplaces by Napoleon, direct-vent heaters by Rinnai and direct-vent kerosene heaters by Toyotomi.
Long said they handle the sales and can subcontract through Kelco Heating in Peru for customers who need labor performed on the units.
Adirondack Hardware is a full-service hardware store. They carry hand tools, power tools, fasteners, hardware, paints and painting supplies, electrical supplies, plumbing fixtures and supplies, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, housewares, lawn and garden supplies, sporting goods and general automotive equipment.
They also offer equipment rentals.
Long said his father always took pride in the store’s appearance, as it is one of the anchors of Keeseville’s business district.
The store has been well supported by the community, he said.
“We do have a good following of loyal customers that have been coming here for years,” Long said.
He said they also enjoy seeing new faces, especially young people who are starting in careers such as plumbing, heating, carpentry or lawn care.
Long said his father, Robert Long, opened Adirondack Hardware’s Keeseville location 40 years ago. The company added locations in Willsboro and Malone in the 1980s, he said.
Long and Barbara Gero took over the operation about two years ago, he said.
There are about 20 employees total in the three locations.
“We’ve got a sound staff, many of whom have been here quite a while,” Long said. “They are very knowledgeable and helpful, and they’re all local.”
Adirondack Hardware is open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The stores accept cash, checks and credit cards. They offer charge accounts, gift certificates, layaway and financing with their Home Source cards.
