New York City opens 3 Upstate reservoirs to small boats
MARGARETVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — New York City officials say they will allow rowboats, canoes, kayaks, sculls and small sailboats on three more of their upstate reservoirs this summer.
The city's Department of Environmental Protection announced the expansion of the recreational boating program at the Neversink, Pepacton and Schoharie reservoirs on Friday.
The new rules in effect Memorial Day weekend will be similar to a three-year pilot program at Cannonsville Reservoir, which will now be made permanent.
Only metal rowboats with boat tags issued by the DEP are currently allowed on the Neversink, Pepacton and Schoharie reservoirs and only for fishing. The new program will allow tags to be issued by certified private steam cleaning vendors for the other small boats.
Also, new boat launches will be built at each reservoir.
