Basic training for boating safely on Lake Champlain this summer will be available through two special evening classes Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 and 15.
"About Boating Safely" is offered by Flotilla 15-8, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Plattsburgh.
A certificate of completion will be issued that is acceptable in all states. The course satisfies New York state requirements for mandatory education for jet-ski (personal water craft) operators.
"We consider this course essential for all recreational boaters, whether you own a powerboat, sailboat, canoe or kayak," said Robert Shivokevich, public education officer. "This is a perfect time of year to start planning for summer boating recreation."
Topics covered in the course include types of boats and boat maintenance; preparations to make before you leave the dock; navigation rules and aids to navigation; how to handle emergencies; and state-specific laws and regulations.
The course will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 14 and 15, at the South Plattsburgh Fire Department on Route 22 (next to the NYSEG office building).
Pre-registration is required. The course is free but the cost of text and materials is $30 per person.
