Charter Communications upgrades reliability

'Ring' installation aims at ending storm interruptions

PLATTSBURGH — Charter Communications has completed an upgrade to increase reliability of its communications network during severe weather or construction accidents.

The company recently completed installation of a 10-gigabit ethernet "ring," which enables alternate routing for video, data and voice signals during network interruptions from construction accidents or weather.

Gregory Garabedian, vice president and general manager for Charter's New England Operations, said it is the latest way the company plans to provide better service to its users.

"We now have a higher capacity of redundancy built into our network, which ensures an even greater level of service reliability to our customers," he said in a press release.

"Our new 10-gig ring provides added protection of our video, data and voice services from outside elements."

The storms of 2011 impacted power, phone, cable and fiber lines attached to utility poles, causing a disruption to critical services throughout the area at times.

With the addition of this new redundant fiber-optic link, Charter now has the capacity to efficiently manage the re-routing and flow of its signal to customers if the network sustains damage, the release said.

"This addition adds one more layer of protection to the Charter network, further elevating the level of service available to homes, schools, hospitals and businesses in the Vermont and New York area," Charter Business Director of Sales Ross Bopp said.
