PERU — Almost a year after a burglary at Peru Central School, a Plattsburgh man has been arrested.
Scott L. Bascom, 36, is charged with third-degree burglary with illegal entry with intent after police questioned him in connection with the March 23 incident. The charge is a felony.
He was taken into custody by State Police at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Plattsburgh State Police Investigator Brian Sypek said Bascom was initially questioned after a concerned citizen contacted authorities after hearing a conversation allegedly implicating Bascom in the crime.
Sypek said they later found DNA linking him to the burglary at the school.
Jay Bouchard, superintendent of buildings and grounds at Peru Central School, had noticed evidence of the burglary and vandalism on March 24.
He notified school administrators, who quickly contacted the State Police.
A window in the High School nurse's office was shattered, and the Middle School office suite was vandalized.
Sypek said items were taken from the school but did not specify their nature or value.
Bascom was arraigned in Peru Town Court before Justice James Kirby and as of Monday was held at Clinton County Jail with bail set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.
He is scheduled to reappear in court on Feb. 21.
