TICONDEROGA — This year, the Ticonderoga Winterfest will benefit a local food program for the poor.
The community event will include snowshoeing, sledding, ice skating, broomball, snowmobile rides, wagon rides and a footrace.
Set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, the third-annual Winterfest will be held in Ticonderoga's Percy Thompson Bicentennial Park downtown.
The event is free, but organizers are suggesting a $2 donation or bringing two non-perishable food items for the Ticonderoga Food Pantry.
Several local groups and entities are sponsoring Winterfest, including the Town of Ticonderoga, the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, Ticonderoga Central School District, Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, Ticonderoga Kiwanis and the Adirondack Trailriders snowmobile club.
"It's a great community outing day," Town Supervisor Debra Malaney said. "As cabin fever sets in, it's refreshing to have an event like this that benefits everyone."
BUSINESS DISCOUNTS
In coordination with Winterfest 2012, the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce is promoting Ticonderoga area businesses that will be offering at least a 10 percent discount the day of the event.
"Our Ticonderoga area businesses support the community in so many ways, and we're hoping people who attend Winterfest will support those businesses," Chamber Executive Director Matt Courtright said.
"We want to stress the importance of shopping and getting services locally."
To receive the discount, mention Winterfest or show the Winterfest flyer at the participating businesses. Eleven businesses have signed up for the promotion so far. A list is on the flyer, which is available at the chamber and many stores, and at www.ticonderogany.com.
Participants at Winterfest can also enter to win gift certificates and other prizes. The registration booth will be in the public parking lot behind the Ticonderoga Elks Lodge.
DOWNTOWN COURSE
John Bartlett of the Montcalm Street Partnership said people should bring their own equipment, although some will be available at the event for use.

Before Winterfest begins, the LaChute Road Runners Club of Ticonderoga will sponsor the Snowman Fun Run footrace for all ages.
Awards will be presented to all entrants who finish. Runners should bring a donation of a non-perishable food item for the Ticonderoga Food Pantry.
Registration will be 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Heritage Museum, at the entrance to Bicentennial Park. The race will begin at 10:45 a.m. and follow a downtown course.
