Lookback: July 11-17

25 years ago—1986

▶ A volunteer commission set up to study zoning in the Town of Schuyler Falls received an angry reception from residents after unveiling a draft zoning ordinance. The proposal featured a primarily residential and agricultural town with businesses evaluated on an individual basis. About a third of the 150 person-crowd walked out of the presentation meeting in protest.

▶ Eddie Murphy will bring his "Pieces of My Mind" comedy tour to the Lake Placid Olympic Center this July. Murphy was a little-known comedian when he appeared on "Saturday Night Live" in 1980. He has since starred in several films, including "Beverly Hills Cop."

E The New York State Division for Youth has allocated $96,019 for use in Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties for 1987. The money will be used to try to keep at-risk youth under 21 out of the criminal justice system.

▶ Director Mitch Weiss said this year, the Plattsburgh Summer Music Theatre program is almost perfect — and audiences can see the proof: "West Side Story" opens at Hartman Theatre at Plattsburgh State. The performance came out of 12 days of intensive work by 50 students in the workshop.

50 years ago — 1961

▶ The Lake Placid Village Board moved last night to have the Police Department make a regular nightly check of bars and cocktail lounges. Their aim is to provide a "restraining influence" on the young people of the community.

▶ Altamont's town board voted to take "no action" on the proposed district airport. The board will consider, however, a joint planning venture with Tupper Lake and the Big Tupper Ski Development.

▶ Franklin Country's Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution to urge New York state's recommendation to the federal government to amend welfare regulations. It took action at the request of the City of Newburgh, whose administration of welfare has been declared illegal by state and federal governments.

75 years ago—1936

▶ Girl Scouts filled Camp Tapawingo at Point Au Roche to capacity for its first week of swimming, craft making and nature exploring.

▶ A damaging hail storm, following in the wake of a driving rain coupled with a violent electrical storm, resulted in untold property damage and injury to crops over a wide area of Clinton County.

▶ There has been an increase in the sport of motorboating, says James Banker, proprietor of a boat service station on Lake Champlain. More than 30 motorboats are now anchored at the south end of the lake.

100 years ago—1911

▶ W.B. Smith, proprietor of the Adirondack Fruit Farm, made the last shipment of strawberries. More than 1,100 bushels have been harvested.

▶ Justice Cohalan of the Supreme Court denied the motion of the Delaware & Hudson Railway Company for a new trial made a short time ago when Elizabeth Denike, who sued the company for fraud, was awarded $81,000.

E Readers of the Plattsburgh Republican are treated to a "puzzler." "Why is it, do you suppose/ Every little kid that grows/ Wants to use the garden hose/ Only in his best of clothes?"
