ELIZABETHTOWN — E'Town Days, business banners, signage and flowers are among the summer projects for the Elizabethtown-Lewis Chamber of Commerce.
At its recent meeting, Ron Testa gave a report on possible expenses for the erection of three signs, which would use the international symbols for food, bed and fuel, to advertise the availability of services in Elizabethtown.
The signs, intended for the main arteries leading into Elizabethtown, would be at Route 9N by the Sunoco station, Route 9 heading south into Elizabethtown and at "Malfunction Junction," located 10 miles south of Elizabethtown.
With construction estimated at $200 and an annual permit fee of $100, "it started to get a little expensive," Testa said.
Margaret Bartley suggested the chamber start with one sign for this year.
"We could see how it looks and if it is effective and then perhaps add another sign next year."
The members approved that idea.
FLOWER BASKETS
Evelyn Hatch felt the flower baskets the chamber is placing around the community "look skimpy" and suggested they purchase more plants. About 30 hanging flower baskets scheduled to be put on the bridges.
Mountain Lake Services has volunteered to have its consumers water and maintain the baskets.
BUSINESS BANNERS
Business banners have been placed back up on the power poles in the town.
An attempt to have them all at the same height will be considered for future years.
Members felt they still look good in the banners third year of use, primarily due to the fact that they were stored flat during the winter months.
YARD SALE
The Chamber decided not to charge for inclusion in the map for the townwide yard sale for E'Town Days. Anyone interested in being featured on the map can email mail@ElizabethtownChamber.com; call 873-9225 and leave a message with your name, the address of the yard sale and phone number; or stop by the Elizabethtown Town Hall 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
The information needs to be received by July 9.
E'town Days starts July 15, with fireworks and major events on July 16, wrapping up on July 18.
BROCHURES
Chamber brochures, which feature information about its 76 members, town services and a map, are being distributed.
During discussion, chamber members decided to update the informational notebooks placed in businesses at the end of the summer season.
GRANT FOR BENCHES
Bartley informed the chamber that several mini-grants could be derived from $35,000 awarded to Essex County Public Health to encourage healthful activities.
She suggested applying for a mini-grant to place public benches along well-traveled walkways. The chamber OK'ed her to proceed with the application.
Bartley also presented an idea for the sale of limited-edition prints and notecards of historic paintings depicting the courthouse in the 1800s and the downtown area in the 1940s.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
The next chamber meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. today at the museum in Elizabethtown.
The Aug. 2 meeting will be held at 8 a.m. at the Arsenal Restaurant.
Meetings are open to members and non-members.
