MALONE — A Malone man is charged with threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend, turning the knife on a police officer and spitting on a judge.
Eric S. Gonzalez, 25, pleaded not guilty to a grand-jury indictment Monday for one count each of second-degree attempted murder and menacing a police officer and two counts of second-degree criminal contempt.
He was arraigned in County Court before Judge Robert G. Main Jr. and returned to County Jail without bail.
Gonzalez is accused of ignoring an order of protection issued Nov. 4 on behalf of his former girlfriend, Lori Matthews.
He reportedly told a friend he was going to kill her then walked to her Webster Street house.
After Gonzalez left, the friend called the Malone Village Police to report the threat.
Patrol Officer Michael Crawford was already on patrol on Webster Street when dispatch told him of the call and also of a subsequent 911 call Matthews had made to report Gonzalez was at her front door, threatening her.
Crawford "was there within seconds and confronted him on the porch," said Police Chief Steve Stone. "He pulled his duty weapon and ordered Eric to the ground.
"He was threatening (Crawford) with the knife, and there was a verbal exchange with him yelling threats at the officer and (Matthews)," the chief said.
Crawford reportedly ordered him to the ground, and Gonzalez did so, leaving the kitchen knife where it was so it could be safely moved away.
"He was in the right place at the right time," Stone said of his officer.
Gonzalez was handcuffed, arrested and taken to Town of Malone Court where he was arraigned before Justice Michael Lamitie.
But during the court appearance, Gonzalez was reportedly disruptive "and verbally abusive to the judge and spit on him," Stone said.
The Village Police and county District Attorney's Office have had previous dealings with Gonzalez, who is reportedly facing a drunken-driving count in Harrietstown stemming from a Jan. 2 arrest, a criminal-contempt count from Feb. 2 in the Village of Malone and a March 5 count for second-degree aggravated harassment in the Town of Malone.
He was convicted by a jury in June 2008 of two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child for serving alcohol to minors in October 2006.
Gonzalez was sentenced to two consecutive one-year terms in County Jail for the endangerment charges and a separate one-year sentence after that for providing the alcohol.
He appealed the sentence, had it overturned and saw it modified so he was in jail for two consecutive one-year sentences, one for endangerment and one for unlawfully dealing with a child.
