Residents to decide Port Henry's fate
PORT HENRY — The Village Election in Port Henry Tuesday will include a referendum on whether to disband the municipal government.
The dissolution vote is part of the noon to 9 p.m. election at the village fire station at 14 Church St.
Village Clerk Denise Daly said the Village Board feels the issue is so important that transportation to and from the firehouse will be provided for those voters who do not have a way to get to the polls. People should call 546-7667 to make arrangements for transportation.
A study on the effects of dissolving the village showed that taxes could decrease 24 to 33 percent, but several special taxing districts, including a Port Henry Fire District, would be created to continue existing services to former village residents.
The Town of Moriah would take Port Henry's property if the village dissolved. Dissolution would take effect at midnight Dec. 31, 2011.
If dissolution fails, by law it can't be brought up again for two years.
