SCHROON — High winds fueled a raging fire that destroyed a seasonal home on Adirondack Road early Thursday.
"By the time we arrived there, it was fully engulfed," Schroon Lake Fire Chief Paul McCann Sr. said from the local fire station Thursday afternoon.
The fire was first reported at 5:10 a.m. by an automated alarm and was then called in by a neighbor who spotted thick smoke drifting from the large two-story lake house.
The house, owned by Michael Carroll of Delmar, sits about 1,700 feet off the road on the shores of Lake Champlain, where morning winds topped at about 40 mph and complicated the initial fire-fighting effort.
"It really worsened the conditions," McCann said of the fierce winds.
But despite the wind and rural location, Schroon Lake volunteers, aided by firefighters from Pottersville, North Hudson, Chilson and Horicon, were eventually able to quell the fast-moving flames.
"The house is a total loss, but we did save a garage that was approximately 50 feet away."
Firefighters remained at the house for several hours Thursday, battling the fire and investigating its cause; no injuries were reported.
McCann said a neighbor notified Carroll of the blaze and that he arrived at the charred and collapsed home later Thursday to survey the damage.
The property is insured.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated Thursday afternoon.
