Canadian woman sentenced for drug smuggling

— Arrested with contraband found in gas tank in June 2011

ALBANY — A Canadian woman convicted of attempting to smuggle drugs with a high-end value of $2.1 million into the United States has been sentenced to 15 years and eight months in prison.

Tara Haynes, 34, of Montreal was arrested in June 2011 at the Champlain border crossing by Clinton County Sheriff's Department deputies after Customs and Border Protection agents discovered 21 clear, vacuum-sealed bags of pills hidden in the gas tank of the rental car she was driving.

The tablets, valued at between $500,000 and $2.1 million, were later found to contain Methamphetamine, Ecstasy and a drug known as "Foxy Methoxy."

Haynes was convicted of possession with attempt to distribute a controlled substance and attempted importation of a controlled substance after a four-day trial before U.S. District Court Judge Mae A. D'Agostino in Albany in August.

She was sentenced in New York federal court on Monday, according to a Department of Justice press release.
