PLATTSBURGH — The future role of the arts in Clinton County will be the focus of three upcoming events.
Sponsored by the Partnership for Community Development, they will include a look at the role a restored Strand Theatre would have in the region's growth and economic development.
Mountain Lake Journal will air a roundtable discussion on the role of the arts at 8 p.m. Thursday on Mountain Lake PBS. The show is hosted by Thom Hallock, and panelists are TwinState President and CEO Devi Momot, CVPH Medical Center President and CEO Stephens Mundy and Plattsburgh State Economics Professor Colin Read.
STRAND UPDATE
Then, the Partnership for Community Development will host "The State of the Arts" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Frances and Hyman Krinovitz Recital Hall in Hawkins Hall at Plattsburgh State. Members of the partnership will gather for a discussion of the role cultural and artistic activities can have on the social and economic lives of area residents.
Glens Falls National Bank CEO Thomas Hoy will talk about how people in Glens Falls worked together to convert a vacant building into the Charles R. Wood Theater, which opened downtown in June 2004.
Mundy will talk about ongoing efforts to restore the Strand Theatre into a performing arts center and its importance to economic development efforts.
Performances by the Chamber Trio, Plattsburgh State Cardinal Singers, Guibord's School of Dance and Adirondack Regional Theater will precede the discussion.
CALL-IN SHOW
Mountain Lake PBS will conduct a live episode of Mountain Lake Journal at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16.
The public is invited to call in to join a discussion on the future of the arts in the region.
Joshua Kretser, owner of pod studio and chair of the Arts in Clinton County Task Force, said the events are intended to provide a glimpse of the present state of the arts and their future.
"Live local performances play an important role in attracting new businesses and retaining current employers in our communities. As with recreational advantages, people expect to have many more opportunities available to them in their local communities in addition to their jobs," he said in a press release. "We hope everyone that attends will gain a sense of pride in the arts that we currently have in Clinton County.
"With more input and participation in our efforts, I believe we can enrich our lives and our children's lives."
upcoming FORUMS
The Arts in Clinton County Task Force is one of four that has been created through the Partnership for Community Development's work to support the VISION 2040 plan — now VISION2ACTION — as participants work to bring a number of VISION 2040 goals to fruition. Those goals include bringing 3,000 new families to the region by 2040, building a welcoming environment for new families and promoting a sense of regional pride.
The other task forces are scheduled to host forums this year. Recreational Opportunities, with Chair Luke Cyphers, is scheduled for April 5; Transportation — Moving People Regionally, with Chair Maggie Barie, is scheduled for July 12; and Education — Cradle to Career, headed by Paul Grasso, is scheduled for Oct. 11.
