Gonyo sentencing moved

PLATTSBURGH — The sentencing of Melissa L. Gonyo has been moved to the end of February.

The Beekmantown woman, 21, pleaded guilty in Clinton County Court in mid-December to criminally negligent homicide for the death of her infant son.

She originally faced a manslaughter charge for the September 2010 incident, when her 6-month-old son was left propped up in a chair and suffocated.

Officials said Gonyo had left the child unattended downstairs in the home as she went back upstairs to sleep.

The child's father, Jonathon P. Whalen, 28, found the infant dead several hours later. Whalen was charged with child endangerment after pleading guilty in August 2011 and was sentenced to spend 30 days in jail and pay nearly $1,000 in fines.

Gonyo was scheduled to be sentenced for the homicide on Jan. 27, but her sentencing was adjourned to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 28.

No information was available on why the court date was changed.
