FORT COVINGTON — An elderly woman was critically injured in a fire that destroyed her Fort Covington home Sunday morning.
Doris J. Barlow, who is in her 90s, was believed to have been the sole occupant of the home located at 2358 Chateaugay St.
Robert Hosler, chief of the Fort Covington Fire Department, said Barlow was out of the house when firefighters arrived.
It is unclear whether she got out of the home on her own or was rescued by a passer-by.
Barlow was transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center, then transferred to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington.
An Alice Hyde spokesperson said Sunday evening that Barlow was in critical condition when she was transferred.
Fort Covington firefighters were dispatched to the home at 9:17 a.m. They arrived to find the building engulfed in flames, according to Hosler.
"There were flames showing," he said.
For six hours, between 50 and 60 firefighters from Fort Covington, Westville, Bombay, Hogansburg and Bangor Fire departments battled the blaze, which ultimately rendered the home a total loss, according to Hosler.
The home had been one story with a garage attached, according to Jim Gilbride, a photographer for the Burke Fire Department who went to the scene when the fire was called in.
"There was nothing left to it at the end," Gilbride said. "It was right down to the ground."
The cause and source of the fire are still under investigation. However, the fire did not appear to be of suspicious origins, he said.
Hosler said he did not know if the home was insured.
