PLATTSBURGH — Dr. Frederick Woodward has been named interim director of the Development Corp.
Donald Duley, chairman of the Development Corp. Board of Directors, said Woodward has been a well-respected and active member of the board and served on its Education Committee.
"In addition, Fred brings with him a keen understanding and deep appreciation for Clinton County. We are delighted to have Fred back on board in this new capacity," he said in a statement.
Woodward said he, in turn, is pleased to have been asked to take on the role of interim president.
"The Development Corp. is ready for the year ahead. The staff and board have done an exemplary job of planning," he said. "I look forward to working with such a dedicated group of staff members and community leaders."
EDUCATION FOCUS
Woodward served as member of the board in 2008 and has spent much of his career in higher education. He was interim president of Clinton Community College from 2007 through 2009.
Before that, he was president of Westfield State University in Westfield, Mass., from August 1997 through January 2004. He served as president of SUNY Morrisville from 1988 to 1997, a position that included responsibility for the campuses at Morrisville, Norwich and the Educational Opportunity Center at Syracuse.
Woodward was president of Butler Community College in Butler, Pa., from 1985 to 1988 and interim president at Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson from 1983 to 1984.
Earlier in his career, he held the position of assistant dean of professional studies at Plattsburgh State. He was the director of inmate higher education at Clinton Community College from 1975 to 1977 and was chair of the Business Division there from 1970 to 1973.
PSU ALUM
Woodward has been active in educational pursuits throughout his career. He served as chair of the Massachusetts Council of Presidents, the College of Technology Presidents and the Pennsylvania Community College Presidents Association, just to name a few.
He has also served on the SUNY Chancellor's Task Force on Budget and Policy Analysis, the national Think Tank for college presidents and was keynote speaker for the Leadership Education Institute.
Woodward did his post-doctoral study at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education, in 1993.
He earned his Doctor of Education at the University of Virginia in 1981 and a Master of Science at Plattsburgh State. He did his graduate work while attending SUNY Albany and earned his bachelor's at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vt.
SUCCESSION PLAN
The position at the Development Corp. became available when former President Adoré Flynn Kurtz announced her retirement.
The Board of Directors has worked within its established succession plan to create a Recruitment Committee to oversee a national search for a permanent president and chief executive officer.
The Development Corp. is a nonprofit economic-development agency with 50 years of activity in Clinton County. The corporation develops industrial parks, markets the county for new business investments and works to retain and expand local industry.
The corporation also administers the County of Clinton Industrial Development Agency, the Town of Champlain Industrial Development Agency and Clinton County's Foreign-Trade Zone 54.
