ELIZABETHTOWN — At Elizabethtown Community Hospital's Healthy Heart Day, visitors took advantage of free blood testing for cholesterol- and glucose-levels and learned about healthier lifestyles.
The open-house event was part of ECH's February program for cardiovascular system wellness.
"Ensuring heart health is one of the most important things anyone can do," Dr. Rob DeMuro said in an e-mail.
"There are many conditions that lead to heart disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. If detected early, the conditions are often treatable, lessening the likelihood that heart disease will develop later on."
The event offered community members the opportunity to take part in a free heart-health screening. Visitors were able to have blood-pressure, heart-rate and oxygen-level checks.
And they were given easy exercise tips, food samples and heart-healthy recipes. They also viewed exhibits and talked with health-care professionals.
In addition to ECH, exhibitors included Cornell Cooperative Extension, Essex County Public Health and Fidelis Care.
This year, Healthy Heart Day featured an opportunity to visit with staff from the hospital's cardiac rehab program and to learn about the equipment and technology required to make the program a reality.
"It's really interesting technology," said cardiac rehab exercise specialist Kristin Dooley.
"The high-tech equipment and wireless monitoring system are impressive. The exercise equipment tracks and monitors patient progress."
