PLATTSBURGH — A new shoe store has stepped into a downtown Plattsburgh location.
Urban Soles is owned by the husband-and-wife team of Dan Albert and Deb Cleary.
Cleary said they had been thinking about going into the shoe business for a couple of years.
“We’d had almost nonstop complaints from our friends about the lack of stores carrying high-quality shoes in Plattsburgh,” she said.
QUALITY NAMES
The store carries a number of well-known brands for both men and women. That includes the Kalso Earth Shoe and Earth brands. Cleary said the negative heel is good for the calves.
Sanita is a line of Danish-style clogs. Cleary said they are particularly popular with teachers and health-care workers.
Emu features a line of high-quality, Australian sheepskin boots. Pikolinos is a Spanish company that offers high-quality leather boots, Cleary said.
“I think they’re going to be popular,” she said.
Johnston and Murphy is a fun brand, Cleary said. They have a retro line available for fall.
Other brands include Sofft, Keen, Patagonia, Birkenstock, Joseph Sibel, Franco Sarto and Alegria.
GROWING STOCK
“We’ll have more as the season progresses,” Cleary said.
New styles of shoes come out twice yearly, for spring/summer and fall/winter. She said some of the fall/winter shoes aren’t out yet, but they will likely be getting deliveries into October.
Cleary said she’s going to a shoe show soon to start shopping for spring lines.
A number of handbags are also available at the shop.
RENOVATED
Cleary said Todd Shippee renovated the space, which used to house the offices of Dr. Jonathan Mulholland, based on her vision. That includes hardwood floors and bright, colorful walls.
She took the photos of downtown Plattsburgh that are featured on the walls. Track lighting and some drop-down lights help display the shoes.
The business has been well received, Cleary said. They plan to have a grand opening event to coincide with Battle of Plattsburgh weekend.
DOWNTOWN LOCATION
“We wanted to be downtown. We liked the idea of being near the Farmers Market and Durkee Street parking lot,” she said.
Plattsburgh Mayor Donald Kasprzak welcomed the new business to the city.
“It’s great news that Urban Soles has made a commitment to downtown Plattsburgh. Their investment is very much appreciated,” he said.
Urban Soles is located at 33 Durkee St., next to Maui North. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
The store takes cash, credit cards, checks and will soon accept Cardinal Cash. Gift certificates are also available.
