New configuration at local business

PLATTSBURGH — A trio of businesses have rearranged to improve access and visibility.

The shake-up took place recently at the Farm and Family/Taylor Rental/Party Plus property at 550 Route 3 in the Town of Plattsburgh. Farm and Family Manager Angie Nephew said that business moved from the back of the building to the front, where it is more visible from Route 3 and its high traffic volume.

"We're actually very pleased with the move. I've noticed business has really increased," she said. "I've noticed tourists just driving by have come in."

Some walls that separated the businesses were torn down. They went with an Adirondack-style decor for the Farm and Family section, with wood-paneled walls for the boot displays.

The move has allowed Farm and Family to increase choices offered in some of its product lines, including Carhartt and Dickies. Nephew said the business now offers high-visibility and flame-retardant options from those companies.

Those products had been requested by customers of both Farm and Family and Taylor Rental.

"Out Taylor Rental customers are traditionally a contractor or a do-it-yourselfer. That's the kind of person who would wear our clothes," Nephew said.

The store continues to offer a big line of steel-toe footwear, including Red Wing, Chippewa and Wolverine. Selections include ladies models and composite-toe footwear, which are not as hefty but still meet OSHA guidelines, Nephew said.

The store also carries a full line of accessories, such as socks, suspenders, hats and rain wear.

"This year, with all the flooding, we sold a lot of rain wear and rubber boots," Nephew said.

Taylor Rental, part of the True Value family, now uses the former Farm and Family space for its heavier equipment and service area. Its smaller equipment is in the north end of shared Farm and Family space.

The company offers rentals and sales of equipment for all kinds of indoor and outdoor projects, for both residential and commercial users. Heavy equipment, light equipment, hand-held tools and hardware make up much of the inventory.

Mike Lareau of Taylor Rental said that if they don't have it in stock, they can find it.

"We can sell just about anything we rent," he said.

It won't be the one you rented, Lareau said, but a new version of that piece of equipment.

He said the company offers local rentals, one-way rentals and commercial rentals.

"We even rent Penske trucks. A lot of people don't know that," Lareau said.

The business has a rapidly growing inventory, trying to keep up with growing demand for its products. Taylor Rental offers service of all its products also.

Work is being completed on the Party Plus space. Nephew said it should be open sometime in July.

It is now out front on the western side of the building. That is where the offices for the businesses, now also in the back, used to be located.

Party Plus is managed by Nick Longino. He said they carry just about anything you need to throw a party, whether it be just a birthday party or a huge reception.

"We just did a company carnival for Nova Bus. We are trying to get more business like that," Longino said.

The inventory includes tents, tables, chairs, linens, bounce houses, games and concession-style foods such as popcorn and cotton candy.

"This year alone, we've doubled our inventory of tents," he said.

Despite that, every one was rented for the next to last weekend of June, Longino said.
