Plattsburgh ranks high in national publication

▶ Ranks 25th in analysis of regions with fewer than 50K residents

PLATTSBURGH — A national publication has named the City of Plattsburgh one of the most successful small cities in the country.

Site Selection Magazine ranks it 25th among the best micropolitan cities — those with populations of 10,000 to 50,000 people.

The selection was based on significant investments and new industrial facilities, according to the magazine.

"It is quite an honor to be selected the 25th best micropolitan in the nation and is an indication of the hard work we've done the past four years to better our community," Mayor Donald Kasprzak said.

"While it has been a challenge, we are hopeful that this is a sign that we are doing many things correctly."

'COMPELLING PROOF'

According to a news release from the magazine, the vast majority of top 25 micropolitans are in the South, leaving Plattsburgh as one of the best in the Northeast.

"We saw a number of regions fall off the list completely this year because of the challenging economy over the last few years, so to make the top of the list of 100 out of thousands of micros that submitted data for this nationwide is tremendous," said Mike Glennon of Site Selection.

"Plattsburgh should be very proud."

Thomasville/Lexington, N.C., was ranked first by the magazine. The only other New York small city in the top 25 was Batavia, which came in tied for ninth.

Watertown/Fort Drum tied for 74th.

Adoré Flynn Kurtz, president of The Development Corporation, said such recognition will help attract more business to the area.

"Being ranked in the top 25 micropolitan sites in the United States puts Plattsburgh in the 'consideration phase' much earlier in the site-selection process and is compelling proof to existing local companies and new business prospects that Plattsburgh is a good place to do business," she said.

The news comes on the heels of an announcement this week that Laurentian Aerospace will break ground in April on a $175 million aircraft repair and maintenance operation at Plattsburgh International Airport, which is expected to employ hundreds once it's completed.
