Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

Police Log: Feb. 19, 2010

FELONY ARREST
WILLSBORO — A Willsboro man was charged with a felony after allegedly firing a shot from a rifle that hit a car on Main Street.

According to State Police, Devon S. Crowningshield, 22, was charged with two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony, and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.

Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police, Crowningshield allegedly fired one round from a rifle that struck an occupied vehicle.

An occupant in the vehicle sustained a minor injury from broken glass, police said, but no one else was hurt.

Crowningshield was arraigned before Elizabethtown Town Justice William Garrison and sent to the Essex County Jail without bail.

He is scheduled to reappear in Willsboro Town Court at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office is investigating the incident.

FUGITIVE NABBED
CHAMPLAIN — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers apprehended a man from Georgia who was wanted for alleged child molestation.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers at the Champlain Port of Entry encountered Sam Charles, 44, a citizen of Haiti and a resident of Atlanta, Ga., on Wednesday.

Charles was in the custody of the Canada Border Services Agency and was being removed from Canada after a failed refugee claim.

The Canadian officials told the U.S. officials that Charles may be wanted on a warrant in Georgia.

U.S. officials found out that a nationwide no-bond felony warrant for Charles was issued about two weeks ago by the Sandy Springs, Ga., Police Department.

The warrant charged Charles with molestation of a minor child.

Charles apparently fled the United States shortly after the warrant was issued.

Customs and Border Protection officers turned Charles over to the State Police, pending extradition to Georgia.

"Fugitive apprehensions, like the one made yesterday by CBP officers in Champlain, play a significant role in protecting our country and keeping our streets safe from these wanted criminals," Randy Howe, CBP assistant director of field operations for the Buffalo office, said.

CAR HITS PEDESTRIAN
SARANAC LAKE — A Saranac Lake woman was injured when hit by a vehicle Thursday evening.

According to Saranac Lake Village Police, Amy C. Zenzel, 21, was crossing Church Street near Helen Street shortly after 6 p.m. when she was hit by a Jeep Liberty driven by Carol A. Brown, 61.

Zenzel was taken to Adirondack Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Brown was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.
