VERMONTVILLE — An early morning fire tore through a double-wide manufactured home at 384 Swinyer Road on Wednesday.
The sole resident, John Roach, was at work when the blaze broke out, but hurried home when he got word of the fire.
Fire officials from Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department said the call came in at 6:26 a.m., placed by a neighbor who spotted smoke inside.
Danielle Akey, lieutenant fire chief for Bloomingdale, said 17 volunteer firefighters responded in three trucks to combat the blaze.
"The fire started in the kitchen area," she said.
A majority of the house was destroyed.
Roach said the property is insured.
WINDOWS BLOWN OUT
Rick Gonyea, who lives near Swinyer Road, heard sirens as he sat down for breakfast.
"A neighbor called me asking me where it was," he said. "Then I heard some more sirens, and I ran down to take some pictures. When I got down there, the trailer — it was a double-wide, an older one — was full of smoke, with smoke coming out of each end. I think the fire personnel did a pretty decent job getting to it. They entered the front door and the driveway side door, right where the fire was at."
A section of roof over the kitchen area later caved in, Gonyea said, and windows were blown out as the fire spread.
In addition to Bloomingdale firefighters, Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department sent three trucks with full crews to assist.
Paul Smith's-Gabriels Fire Department responded to mutual aid calls with three trucks, along with firefighters from Lake Placid and Wilmington departments. A crew from Saranac Volunteer Fire Department stood by in Bloomingdale's station.
Bloomingdale fire trucks were back in service at 11:19 a.m., Akey said.
No injuries were reported in battling the blaze, which remained under investigation by the Franklin County Cause and Origin team.
