25 YEARS AGO — 1985 Proponents of constructing a new state prison in Malone, including Sen. Ronald B. Stafford (R-Plattsburgh), are anticipating an appropriation for the facility in the upcoming state budget.
State agencies will help flood-stricken Franklin County residents repair roads, bridges and other damage they suffered the weekend of Dec. 30. The state help comes as a result of an executive order signed by Gov. Mario Cuomo.

50 YEARS AGO — 1960 It's a happy new year for North Country steelworkers. Workers and managers alike are joyful over the announcement of an agreement between the United Steel Workers and the major steel manufacturers.
Druggists in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties agree to refuse to fill prescriptions issued by the Essex County Welfare Department. At issue is that those prescriptions call for generic drugs, not brand names.
City of Plattsburgh building permits for December 1959 totaled far less in value than during the same period in 1958. Total estimated cost of all building during the month was $96,000. In December 1958, proposed building was valued at $561,300.
Because of the steel strike, the reconstruction of the Clinton County Jail is way behind schedule. The sheriff had predicted it would be ready by the new year. Now it may be March or later.
75 YEARS AGO — 1935 The International Paper Co. mill at Piercefield will open within the next two weeks, employing 350 men. Orders amounting to $750,000 will be filled.
Vincent DeLeo, alias Vincent Amerigo, condemned murderer, must die in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison the week of Feb. 18. He was convicted of killing Daniel Nickerson, a guard at Clinton Prison.
A statue of St. Peter still stood between the St. Lawrence River ice pack and the Indian Village of St. Regis while the Indian said prayers of thankfulness that the river was receding.
Construction of Malone's new post office is now 60 days ahead of schedule. It is expected the new federal building will be ready for occupancy by April 1.
100 YEARS AGO — 1910 The Dannemora School is badly damaged by fire, which started in an overheated pipe.
A grand-opening ball is held at the new Town Hall in Dannemora. Music for the occasion is furnished by Lynch Orchestra of six pieces.
The Presbyterians of Saranac Lake have outgrown their present church and are making plans for important changes. Some consideration is being given to a plan to enlarge the church, while a number of members favor a new place of worship.
The Farrar Home for Old Ladies in Malone is formally opened. The house has been thoroughly repaired and presents a home-like, cheerful aspect.
