KEESEVILLE — Fire destroyed a mobile home on Allen Hill Road Tuesday night, though firefighters were able to rescue two pets.

Keeseville Fire Department received a call from neighbors at 9:01 p.m. that a double-wide mobile home owned by Carie Jabaut was on fire.

No one was home at the time, Keeseville Fire Capt. Kyle Roberts said.

"When I pulled up, fire was breaking through the ceiling," said Roberts, who was the first officer to arrive. "It had a pretty good start on us."

Battling not only the blaze but frigid temperatures, firefighters quickly set up hoses from a nearby pond to feed their tanker trucks.

They were able to extinguish the main blaze relatively quickly, but flames had reached an attic area that was hard to get to, Roberts explained.

"The home was a total loss, but we were able to salvage quite a bit of stuff from her outside shed. The guys did an excellent job."

Firefighters also moved in quickly to remove a cat and dog that were inside the burning double wide. Both animals appeared to be unharmed, Roberts added.

He did not know if Jabaut lived there alone or where she was staying following the loss.

Roberts said the fire was ruled accidental and may have started from burning ambers from a wood stove.

Firefighters were at the home until 3:30 a.m., though a small crew remained throughout the night to monitor the situation.

No firefighters were injured, and no other structures were in danger from the flames.

AuSable Forks, Peru and South Plattsburgh fire departments assisted in the effort, while Willsboro stood by at the Keeseville station.
