RIVERVIEW — For the last two decades, Whitey and Flo Keese have opened their hearts and camp to the community each fall.
Every August, the Keeses invite the public to their rural Cold Brook Road property for a weekend of free camping, music and fun for all ages.
And it was at that camp where the Keeses spent a joyous Christmas morning with their daughter and granddaughters before the day turned to tragedy and they watched their legacy go up in flames.
“I just thank the Lord that we all got out safe,” Mrs. Keese said from her Vermontville home Saturday.
The Keeses’ daughter, Wanda McIntyre, and granddaughters, Breanna, 14, and Nicole, 12, had recently been living in the converted camp and raced from the home in only their pajamas and socks before the fire engulfed the local landmark.
Firefighters spent hours at the camp trying to quell the 5 a.m. blaze but the fast-moving fire left the camp a total loss and destroyed the family’s belongings.
“We got there early and the girls had just opened their presents, and they all went up in flames,” Mrs. Keese said.
Vehicles parked outside the home were also damaged, but, Mrs. Keese said, Saranac firefighters were able to move them from danger before they were destroyed.
Volunteers were also able to save nearby buildings from damage.
For now, the McIntyres will be staying with the Keeses and family friends as they recover from the electrical fire.
They are now in need of all household goods, clothing and other necessities.
