Westport Central wins garden grant

WESTPORT — David Reckahn from Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District and Laurie Davis from Adirondack Harvest met with the Westport Central School Board recently to announce that a grant of $500 was received from the Honeybee Foundation to assist in development of a school garden.

The funds will be used to purchase supplies and start a composting program coordinated by science teacher Jason Fiegl and designed to improve fertility for the new garden.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to have our students participate in bringing local produce to the school," Fiegl said in a news release.

There will be a committee formed with school officials, interested students and parents, Conservation District staff, Adirondack Harvest and Master Gardners to start planning the project in January.

The grant application was the result of the Future of Westport Agriculture Committee formed in 2008; members include local citizens and agency representatives from the town who aim to protect and promote local agricultural enterprises.

One of the first priorities of committee members was promoting community gardens and local produce.
