PLATTSBURGH — Sheila Brockway has not ruled out a future campaign for public office after she was defeated in the Plattsburgh Town Council election.
"I have thought about it. The door hasn't closed," she said this week.
Incumbent Republican Town Councilor Gerard Renadette was re-elected to the Plattsburgh Town Council after a vote recanvass last month.
On election night, Democrat Paul Lamoy received 1,496 votes; Brockway, the incumbent Democrat, 1,469; Renadette, 1,448; and Republican John St. Germain, 1,368.
After the recanvass, which included absentee ballots, the vote count was Lamoy with 1,568 votes; Renadette, 1,539; Brockway, 1,535; and St. Germain, 1,454.
The top two vote-getters take the seats.
Renadette said the result was unexpected.
"I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome."
He looks forward to continuing his work with the Town Council, which will include the newly elected Lamoy. Renadette remains the lone Republican councilor but said that is not an issue.
"We have been able to put politics aside and work for the benefit of the town," he said. "For the last three years, it has never been one sided."
Brockway regrets that she didn't win, but the close race speaks to the quality of the campaign.
"I want to thank Gerry (Renadette) for being a real gentleman during the campaign," she said. "We had a real clean campaign."
Brockway thanked the community for its support and Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett for the chance to serve as deputy supervisor for the past three years.
She said it has been a pleasure to work with Councilors Martin Mannix and Tom Wood, as well.
