Bilingual signs

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh International Airport, which continues to market itself as "Montreal's U.S. Airport," has unveiled a number of new bi-lingual signs throughout the airport site.

"Plattsburgh foresees continued growth in the years ahead as a low-cost, secondary airport serving southern Quebec as well as northern New York," said Garry Douglas, president of the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, which oversees marketing and development at the airport. "Eighty-five percent of our passengers are coming from Quebec, and we are committed to making our airport as welcoming and user-friendly as possible for our Quebec customers."

Opened two years ago, the Plattsburgh terminal featured bi-lingual signage from the start and persuaded the New York State Transportation Department to install bi-lingual airport signs on Interstate 87 as well.

"Our growth has been so strong that we already have had to undertake a major expansion and reconfiguration of our parking lot," Douglas said, "and we have taken the opportunity to install extensive bi-lingual signage in the parking areas."

Plattsburgh International has been created from the massive aviation facilities of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, opening to passenger services in 2006. The U.S. government has provided more than $80 million U.S. for conversion of the former base to new civilian use, and is already funding designs for a major terminal expansion expected to be constructed in 2011 in response to the strong demand for service.
