Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

Officials remind travelers about border laws
CHAMPLAIN — Customs and Border Protection officials are reminding travelers to have proper identification documents when making cross-border trips this holiday weekend.

To help facilitate arrival into the United States, officials are asking travelers to plan in advance by having their documents available before arrival at the border.

To be in compliance with the new Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, travelers should have either a passport card, trusted-traveler card, passport or enhanced driver's license. Children under 16 are still allowed to present valid birth certificates as proof of identification.

Officials expect the busiest time at the border will between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Current traffic conditions will be available at www.cbp.gov.

Peru Town Hall closed; meetings set
PERU — The Peru Town Hall will be closed Thursday and Friday.

The Peru Town Council has scheduled a health-insurance workshop at 6:30 p.m. Monday and the Employee Handbook for 2010 workshop at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10.

A special meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday regarding health insurance.

All meetings and workshops are held at the Town Hall and are open to the public.

AVCS swimming pool open to public
CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Central School swimming pool will be open to the public from 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Sunday, Nov. 29, and ending Sunday, March 7, 2010.

There will be no public swim on Dec. 27 and 30, and Feb. 3, 10 and 17.

The cost for adults will be $2 and children $1.
