ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York state Legislature is scheduled to return to Albany this week to try to do what they couldn't do for two weeks: Address a $3.2 billion deficit.
Gov. David Paterson says that not only must the Legislature agree to cut spending, but it must include politically painful cuts to school aid and health care.
Legislators say the cuts will be too disruptive, forcing layoffs while hurting instruction and hospitals while likely forcing local property taxes even higher.
The Legislature last Thursday scheduled sessions for Monday. The goal is to vote on a deal worked out in weekend negotiations.
