MOIRA — Travelers on U.S. Route 11 might feel a little more at home as they enter the Town of Moira from the east and west.

The Town Council designed roadside signs that state all anyone needs to know about the community: "Nice Town, Friendly People."

"When I came into office, it's one of the things I wanted to accomplish," said Town Supervisor Cindy Gale.

"We have two signs now, one for the east and one for the west, and we're hoping to have two more for the north and south in the spring.

"We put money in this year's budget for it."

Created by Signs of Malone at a cost of $300 each, the design incorporates features important in Moira: the American flag; strong, healthy trees; and the historic clock that stands at the intersection with Route 95 and County Road 5.

Gale said the council members solicited designs from students at Brushton-Moira Central School and then incorporated some of those ideas and their own into the final project.

Placing the new signs is an ongoing mission to spruce up the streets of town and its overall appearance, Gale said.

Two dozen flags were displayed on street lights throughout Moira this past spring, and the town plans to place the red-white-and-blue on 12 more poles in 2010, she said.

"It was important to bring a little warmth to the town with the signs and the flags.

"It's just nice to have something there."
