CHATEAUGAY — Voters in the Chateaugay Central School District approved an $8.8 million capital-construction project Tuesday that would cost taxpayers nothing.
The vote was 138 to 16, with two ballots unmarked.
A combination of favorable state aid and a building-incentive grant, along with $540,000 in tax-payment alternatives from Noble Environmental Power, will pay for the entire $8,840,000 project.
Construction will begin in the summer of 2010 to start Phase 1, which replaces the deteriorating and leaky roof, according to school officials.
The gymnasium will be demolished and a new gym built in its place. Ceiling tiles and outdated light fixtures will also be replaced.
Pre-kindergarten classroom space will be built so a second class can be formed to keep special-needs children in the district with their peers.
Other classrooms with little or poor insulation will be improved, and older windows will be replaced within the project.
The fire-alarm system, emergency generator and an elementary bathroom will be improved, and air conditioning will be added to the auditorium.
Also being replaced will be a 20-year-old playground made of pressure-treated lumber, and the elementary entrance will be made more energy efficient.
