Principal’s DWI case adjourned for fourth time

By KIM SMITH DEDAM

SARANAC LAKE — Driving-while-intoxicated charges brought against St. Bernard's Catholic School Principal Anne Bayruns have not been brought to court.

For the fourth time, the case was adjourned Monday, when it was to be heard at 1 p.m. The hearing was rescheduled for Dec. 14.

Saranac Lake Village Police arrested Bayruns, 44, at 4:52 p.m. Aug. 24 for alleged drunken driving. She was charged with one count of aggravated DWI and one count of common-law DWI.

The aggravated charge stems from an alleged blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit.

Bayruns's attorney Peter Dumas of Malone has not responded to numerous phone calls from the Press-Republican.

No formal plea has been entered in the case.

Bayruns retained her post as principal of St. Bernard's Catholic School in Saranac Lake after the arrest, earning support from both the school community and church leaders.

She is on a leave of absence from the same position at St. Agnes School in Lake Placid.

Early Monday, Franklin County Assistant District Attorney Jack Delehanty said he had not been contacted by the defendant's attorney on the matter.

It is not unusual for court hearings to be postponed, he said.

"There are procedures in civil law, which allow a defendant to have serial adjournment," Delehanty said.

The case has been adjourned to Dec. 14 in Justice Charles Bell's village court.
