Abandoned home in Moira destroyed by fire

MOIRA — An abandoned home was deemed a total loss after a fire late Saturday night.

Moira Fire Chief Keith Fletcher said a passerby called in a fire at 100 County Route 6 at 10:19 p.m.

"The structure itself is still there, but the inside is pretty well gutted," he said.

The home was fully involved when firefighters arrived, Fletcher said, with flames showing from the downstairs family room window. No other homes were close by, so there was little danger of the fire spreading, he said.

Fletcher said the small, 1½-story home is believed to be owned by George Iodan of Moira. Efforts to contact Iodan had not been successful as of Sunday morning, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the New York State Police. Power was running to the circuit-breaker box but not to the interior of the home, Fletcher said.

Moira firefighters received mutual-aid assistance from the Brushton, North Lawrence and Lawrenceville fire departments. Fletcher said firefighters did not face any serious difficulties in extinguishing the flames.

Moira was back in service by 1:30 a.m.
