Woman charged with having sex with inmate

By STEPHEN BARTLETT

MALONE — A Malone woman is charged with having sex with an inmate at Bare Hill Correctional Facility.

Lori J. Shova, 41, who was a vocational instructor at the Malone prison, was charged Friday by New York State Police in Malone and the New York State Department of Corrections Inspector General’s Office with official misconduct and second-degree sexual abuse, both misdemeanors.

The contact occurred once on the day of the arrest, according to Capt. Robert LaFountain of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

New York state law prohibits sexual contact, even consensual, between an inmate and prison-system employees.

Shova, of 120 Duana St., was released on an appearance ticket and will appear in Malone Town Court at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Shova, who taught vocational and custodial maintenance, was a provisional employee with no union protection, according to Eric Kriss, a spokesman with the Department of Corrections.

“She attempted to resign, but we actually terminated her,” Kriss said Tuesday.
