Saranac Lake apartment building destroyed by fire

By ANDREA VanVALKENBURG

SARANAC LAKE — An early morning fire has destroyed an apartment building and damaged another.

Saranac Lake volunteers were called to the two-story building on Franklin Avenue at about 5:20 a.m. Saturday when they found smoke and flames tearing through the building.

"It was fully involved," said Saranac Lake volunteer and head driver, Shawn White.

More than a dozen Saranac Lake firefighters turned out for the long battle to quell the flames, and were assisted by crews from Bloomingdale, Lake Placid and Paul Smiths.

White said the fire "also got into the adjourning building," though an estimate of damage was not immediately available Saturday afternoon when crews got back into service.

One fireman suffered minor injuries during the fire.

The apartment building has since been deemed a total loss.

The names of the building's occupants and owners were not immediately available Saturday. White would not say how many people were displaced by the blaze.

A cause has not been determined.

No additional information about the fire was available Saturday.
