NY conservation officers arrest bear poachers

RAY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — Less than two weeks into the early bear hunting season, state Environmental Conservation Police have charged 10 men with poaching.

Most of the men were charged with hunting bears over bait piles set up to lure them in. One killed a bear over a bait pile, and another shot a bear using a spotlight at night.

All were ticketed and three have pleaded guilty and paid fines ranging from $125 to $500.

The early Adirondack bear season opened Sept. 19. The regular season starts Oct. 24 in the Adirondacks, Nov. 21 in the Catskills and Nov. 28 in western New York.
