PLATTSBURGH — Curtis Doors Inc., a supplier for Bombardier Transportation, is closing its own doors in Plattsburgh.
Plant Manager Ralf Hartmann was not available Friday, but a man with a French-Canadian accent answering the phone in Hartmann's office said the company was closing and will be entering the Chapter 7 process.
Chapter 7, under the federal bankruptcy code, deals with the liquidation of assets.
The spokesman at Curtis Doors would not provide any other details about the closure.
"We have other priorities today," he said.
The parking lot of the company was virtually empty Friday.
In addition to the Plattsburgh plant, which is located at 104 Sharron Ave. in the city's south end, Curtis Doors has sites in LaPrairie, Que., Canada, Seoul, Korea, Subang, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
A source close to the company said management had brought in what appeared to be several possible buyers in recent weeks to tour the plant.
The source also said the company may have had some problems with recent contracts.
Earlier this week, Bombardier notified about 200 of its 350 workers in Plattsburgh that they may be laid off in late December.
Curtis Doors employed about 45 people.
Paul Grasso of the Workforce Investment Board in Plattsburgh said there are several programs set up to help the displaced workers from Curtis Doors find new jobs.
"These are skilled people who may need some gap training, but we will contact different companies and try to get as many back to work as soon as possible," Grasso said.
In addition to helping workers with resume and letter writing skills, Grasso said help will also be available for interviewing skills.
Funds for further education and training are also available, including a program where workers can go to school while still collecting unemployment.
"It's a tough emotional time for them and we will try to help them as much as we can," Grasso said.
