WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources says biologists have found a new invasive species in Lake Champlain's Missisquoi Bay.
The presence of variable leaved milfoil was confirmed by genetic examination.
The state says the Missisquoi Bay infestation appears to be widespread in a large wetland complex. Biologists say variable-leaved watermilfoil can crowd out beneficial, native aquatic plants.
The agency says the Lake Champlain location was the second place the plant has been found in the state. Last year it was found in Halls Lake in Newbury.
Variable leaved milfoil can easily "hitchhike" on boats and other recreational equipment. The plant is also a popular aquarium species.
