One man dead, one critical after snowmobile accident

SCHROON LAKE — One man was killed and another seriously injured in a snowmobile accident on Schroon Lake Sunday.

According to State Police, Benjamin A. Round, 21, of Warrensburg was driving a snowmobile on the frozen lake early Sunday afternoon with Richard G. Stewart, 33, of Diamond Point riding as a passenger.

The 2002 Yamaha snowmobile was heading west on the lake when Round hit a two-foot snow bank, State Police said. The snowmobile flew into the air, and both Round and Stewart were ejected from the vehicle, which crashed to the ice.

Neither Round nor Stewart were wearing helmets.

Round suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga by the Schroon Lake Rescue Squad, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

An autopsy performed Monday by Dr. C. Francis Varga at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake showed that Round died of blunt-force trauma to the head.

Stewart was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Monday.

Police said their investigation showed that alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident.
