The Press-Republican events calendar appears every Friday. Be sure submissions reach the Press-Republican newsroom at least one week before the calendar in which they need to appear.

Port Henry Labor Day Celebration. 1 p.m. parade with quadricentennial theme. Rita M. Collins, owner of Collins Bar and Motel, is the grand marshal. After the parade Sunday, festivities will be held on Church Street, including a chicken barbecue, amusement rides, concession stands and arts and crafts booths. At 3 p.m. the Fritz Polka Band will play on Church Street, then the In-Laws perform at 6 p.m.

Second-annual Great Adirondack Rutabaga Festival. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Marcy Field, Keene. 10 a.m., 5K run across flat terrain (registration at 9:30); 11 a.m., hula hoop championship; 11:30 a.m., chef-prepared rutabaga dishes; 2009 Rutabaga King and Queen crowned at 1:30 p.m.; 1:45 p.m., Rutabaga Fetch for friendly and talented dog event. MON. SEPT. 7
Holy Name/Saint Matthews Labor Day Celebration. Starts at 10 a.m. with parade beginning on Palmer Street passing through Main Street and ending at the Holy Name Church/School grounds. Town of Jay Supervisor Randall T. Douglas will master of ceremonies; Susan Richards will sing the national anthem. Participants include the AuSable Valley Central School Band, AuSable Valley Dance Club, John Dukett's band Dearly Beloved, Santa's Workshop characters and float, Woody Ward of Ward Lumber Co. and more. The grand marshal for the parade is Ellie Douglas, who has volunteered at numerous fundraisers in Clinton and Essex County for several years. The church, along with St. Margaret's Parish, with honor the Rev. Phillip T. Allen's 50 years of priesthood. A field day celebration will follow the parade on the Holy Name Church/School grounds, featuring Santa's reindeer, the Moon Bounce, chicken barbecue and other food, musical entertainment, bingo starting at 2 p.m., with doors open at noon. The grounds close at 6 p.m. with a large cash raffle drawing.

Tues., Sept. 8

Music by SUNY Plattsburgh's Gospel Choir, remarks by Student Association President Lindsay Lyons and Dr. Becky Kasper; Steven Booth, executive vice president of the college's Student Association, will preside; Jackie Robertin, campus minister at the Newman Center, and Tim Atwater, Protestant campus minister, will lead attendees in prayer. Two Plattsburgh State alumni who perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center: Robert Sutcliffe was a 1984 graduate and worked as a broker for Harvey, Young and Yurman. William Erwin, a 1992 graduate, was a broker from Cantor Fitzgerald.

Dedication of flagpole to honor Doug Knight. 5:30 p.m., administration building at AuSable Valley Central School District, Clintonville. Knight, who died Aug. 9, was a well-known area musician.

David Fitz-Enz on national radio. 1 p.m., the author will be interviewed on Public Radio network's "Here & Now" program from WBUR Boston about his new book, "Redcoats' Revenge," an alternate history of the War of 1812. The show airs on Vermont Public Radio.

FRI.-SUN., SEPT. 11-13
Discover Newcomb Weekend. Focusing on Newcomb's affiliation with the Hudson River and the many surrounding sites that demonstrate the town's historical significance to New York's history. Joe Wiegand will help people relive the events that preceded and followed Vice President Theodore Roosevelt's famous departure from Newcomb. On Sept. 13, 1901, he was hunting with friends at the Tahawus Club in the Town of Newcomb when he learned of the death of President William McKinley. Wiegand performed at the White House during the 150th anniversary of Roosevelt's birthday. Event starts Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m., for an evening of laughter and nostalgia with "Theodore Roosevelt's Patriot Day Salute." Preceding the performance, there will be a pot-luck supper at Newcomb Central School. Other weekend events include a spaghetti dinner, turkey roast, breakfast and lunch at various locations.

Annual Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration. Downtown Plattsburgh and museum area of former Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Music, lectures, displays, children's activities, food vendors, Plucky Rooster contest, storytellers, dance, museums and more; Rockets Red Glare fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Macdonough Monument; encampment of 1814 re-enactors at Kent-Delord House Saturday and Sunday; annual parade, featuring eight marching bands, starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Lodge on Cumberland Avenue. $10 admission button gets wearers into every event. Organized by the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Committee.
