Multina USA to close

PLATTSBURGH — An assembly company here will lay off all of its employees by the end of the month.

Multina USA, whose parent company, Multina Inc., is based out of Drummondville, Quebec, primarily assembles seating units for Bombardier's mass-transit industry.

The company has been in Plattsburgh since the late 1990s and employs 15 people, all of whom will lose their jobs March 31.

Sources at the plant told the Press-Republican the layoffs and closure are a result of the troubled economy and fewer contracts coming in for assembly work.

Multina Inc. will continue serving Bombardier's needs from Quebec after the local closure.

Though staff will be let go by the end of the month, the company itself may remain open for some time afterward to finalize the closure.

Of the 15 current employees, the majority are full time.

At its peak, Multina USA employed about 40 people, but it has slowly decreased its staffing levels in recent years as contracts slowed.

Further details of the closure were not available Friday, but those familiar with the situation said it was very emotional news for the staff.

Multina USA has declined to comment on the layoffs.
