PERU — Police responded to Peru Middle School Thursday morning after a student allegedly brought a CO2 pistol to school.
No one was injured, and school officials and police are investigating the incident.
Superintendent A. Paul Scott said that Middle School administrators contacted the New York State Police school resource officer assigned to the district after receiving a report about inappropriate student conduct Thursday morning.
Two Middle School students allegedly brought prohibited objects to campus.
One student had a CO2 pistol, which is being examined by New York State Police.
“It fires plastic rounds,” Trooper Shawn Murphy said Thursday afternoon.
Anyone under 16, according to New York state law, requires supervision when handling such a weapon, whether it is at a shooting range or hunting.
“Unlawful possession of a weapon defines any spring or compressed-air weapon,” Murphy said.
Because the student is under 16, the matter will be adjudicated under Family Court, he said.
At this point, only one of the teens has been cited, though the incident remains under investigation.
“Administrative followup included taking all steps necessary to ensure a safe educational environment for all involved,” Scott said in a news release.
“The School District appreciates the prompt actions this morning on the part of school employees, Middle School administrators and the New York State Police.”
