MALONE — A Malone woman is behind bars for allegedly abusing her 3-month-old son on a number of occasions earlier this month.
Village Police arrested Chantelle Pittsley, 20, for second-degree assault, a felony.
The arrest came after an investigation into a child-abuse complaint from Franklin County Child Abuse Services, which was filed at 3:13 a.m. May 11, officials said.
Chief Steve Stone said officials with Child Abuse Services were contacted after the boy was brought to the hospital with rib fractures and a brain hemorrhage.
He said the injuries are believed to have been inflicted "on at least two separate incidents over a two-week period of time."
As of Thursday afternoon, the infant remained in the Intensive Care Unit at Alice Hyde Medical Center but was expected to be transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington for evaluation by a pediatric specialist.
The baby will be placed in foster care once he is released from the hospital.
Pittsley was arraigned before Judge John Marsden and remanded to County Jail on a bail of $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
She was still being held there Thursday afternoon and is scheduled to return to Village Court today for a preliminary hearing.
Police are continuing to investigate the reported abuse and are working with the Franklin County District Attorney's Office to determine whether additional charges will be lodged, Stone said.
District Attorney Derek Champagne could not immediately be reached for comment on the case Thursday afternoon.
