DANNEMORA — The longtime highway superintendent for the Town of Dannemora has resigned his position, and a search is on for a temporary replacement.
Pete Barber, whose resignation went into effect Friday night, said he is leaving to spend more time with his granddaughter and family and to work on numerous projects, as well as for health reasons.
In the spring, Barber plans to open Adirondack Furniture and Gifts in Chazy Lake, where he will sell handmade items ranging from wooden kids toys to Adirondack furniture.
He also has a Monitor Heating business and is a member of the Back Porch Band.
"It's been a great run. I've had a lot of fun, met a lot of great people," Barber said from his Chazy Lake wood shop.
"I look forward to my retirement. I'm going to be 71 in May. I've been working since I was 14 years old."
Dannemora Town Supervisor Americo "Ves" Pivetta said the Town Council has already started looking for a replacement for Barber.
The interim superintendent will serve until the next election, which will take place Nov. 6.
Pivetta is looking for someone interested in filling in until then.
"I need someone who lives in the Town of Dannemora and has some equipment and supervisory experience," he said.
The salary will be negotiated, Pivetta said, and the application deadline is this Friday.
Anyone interested can call him at 492-7541, Ext. 103, for more details.
