Peebles sets store opening date

Workers needed for newdepartment store in Ti

TICONDEROGA — After completing a $500,000 remodeling project, the new Ticonderoga Peebles Department Store will be ready for business in less than a month.

The South Hill, Va.-based company will open its Ticonderoga store at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony with local leaders has been scheduled for 8:45 a.m. opening day at the store, located in the former Tops Friendly Market building at the Four Corners intersection of Wicker Street and Routes 9N, 22 and 74.

The building has been vacant for five years, since Tops closed.

“Ticonderoga deserves a hometown store that delivers great fashion brands at great prices,” Stage Stores Chief Executive Officer Michael Glazer said in a news release. “Peebles is that store.”

HIRING 12 PEOPLE

The new store will employ about 12 full- and part-time workers.

Peebles is holding an open interview day for prospective workers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Ticonderoga Community Building on Montcalm Street. For those who can’t make the interview day, Peebles is advising people to stop at the store on or after Monday, Aug. 6. The store manager will be on site between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., except for weekends.

Those hired will report for work Aug. 13 to start stocking shelves.

Peebles is owned by Stage Stores Inc., which operates stores at 800 locations in 40 states. Stage Stores operates under the Peebles, Bealls, Goody’s, Palais Royal and Stage names and had retail sales of about $1.5 billion in 2010.

The closest Peebles stores to Ticonderoga before the grand opening are in Malone and St. Albans, Vt.

Peebles will offer clothing, accessories and cosmetics for women and juniors, as well as men’s and children’s apparel, Glazer said, promising “a shopper’s delight” for customers.

‘FITS RIGHT IN’

The shopping plaza where Peebles will be located also has a Rite Aid Drugs, Advance Auto Parts and Aaron’s Rental Center. The building that Peebles is leasing at 1171 NYS Route 9N is owned by the 1093 Group LLC of Buffalo.

Store Planning Inc. of North Carolina designed the renovations.

“Peebles is something we needed in Ticonderoga,” Town Supervisor Debra Malaney said. “It’s a store that fits right in. I’m looking forward to shopping there.”

Peebles will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23, 24 and 25, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, for its grand-opening weekend.

Thereafter, the store will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

  • Bodily waste can help solve the energy crisis, author says

Bodily waste is widely considered a topic not to be discussed in polite company; it's something to be flushed and forgotten. But a new book argues that waste, in all its human and animal forms, is worth getting to know intimately.
