Host families needed for African visitors this fall

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State and the Program for African Growth through Education are looking for host families for their Youth Leadership Program with Francophone Africa.

The program, made possible through a grant from the U.S. State Department, provides funding for two groups of African students and educators to make three-week visits to the United States to participate in youth leadership training, civic education and community service.

The first group visited this spring, and the second group, comprising 24 students ages 15 to 17 and six adult educators, is set to visit this fall and spend about two weeks in Plattsburgh and one week in Albany and Washington, D.C.

Hosts are needed for the visitors from Sept. 16 through Oct. 1. Someone in the host family must be able to speak adequate French and provide transportation to and from Plattsburgh State each day.

Orientations will be held for host families to learn more about the culture of the guests and their native countries of Mauritania and Ivory Cost.

For more information, contact Theresa Bennett, home-stay coordinator for the Program for African Growth through Education, at 564-2160 or 561-7894 or via email at tbenn002@plattsburgh.edu.
