TICONDEROGA — A public meeting Monday will let residents comment on draft revisions to Ticonderoga's zoning law.
The public-information session is at 7 p.m. in the Ticonderoga Community Building.
The town is working to modernize its zoning law, which hasn't been substantially updated for more than 20 years and was largely derived from suburban-style zoning of the 1960s.
Some of the revisions allow more types of businesses in parts of the town, and others bring the law into conformance with the Town Comprehensive Plan passed by the Ticonderoga Town Council in 2006.
Lakeshore resident Marsha LaPointe said she doesn't agree with more businesses on the lake and is urging people to attend the meeting.
"Basically, some of the new zoning proposals include making the shoreline of Lake George into commercial-development property. Which means not only do we have subdivisions springing up but also the possibility of restaurants and motels on this northern end of Lake George, thanks to our new sewer system."
Residents along Black Point Road were told late last year that they can begin to hook up to the newly constructed municipal system. The project cost $6 million and was constructed by A.P. Reale Construction of Chilson over an 18-month period.
The Ticonderoga Zoning Revision Committee, made up of business and agriculture representatives and interested citizens, has been working to draft a revised law appropriate for a rural, tourism-oriented town.
The committee is chaired by local farmer Bernard Leerkes, who said he is unable to attend the meeting Monday.
The group will be working on the revisions through this spring and will prepare drafts of each section for public review and comment.
The town zoning map is also being updated with the law, so district lines will usually follow property boundaries. Many pieces of land that are now in more than one zoning district will be in just one district, to eliminate uncertainty about where zoning district boundaries are located.
The draft plan and maps are available from the zoning and Planning Board link on the town Web site: www.townofticonderoga.org.
The project is being funded by a Quality Communities grant from the New York State Department of State.
