Malone Middle School to hold open house Saturday

MALONE — Malone Middle School will host an open house for the community from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

A capital project has provided the building with new and renovated buildings and classrooms, a new library media center, educational technology and a revamped gymnasium.

The public is invited to participate in a guided tour with members of the Malone Middle School Student Council or pick up a map and tour the building independently.

Refreshments will be served.

People can sign up for the Middle School's walking program, which allows the public to use the building for exercise, walking in the halls during evening hours.

The community, former Malone Middle School and Franklin Academy alumni are invited to see the improvements and reminisce about the old school, a press release said.

Summer-camp scholarships available from Trout Unlimited

SCHUYLER FALLS — The Lake Champlain Chapter of Trout Unlimited will provide six scholarships for young people ages 11,12 and 13 and 14 through 17 to State Department Environmental Conservation summer camp this summer.

The camps, located at Camp Colby near Saranac Lake and Pack Forest near Warrensburg, as well as Camps Debruce and Rushford elsewhere in the state, offer an opportunity to learn more about the environment and the outdoors.

Campers enjoy a week at either the youth or teen camp, conducted by DEC instructors. The scholarships, which cover all costs, are memorials to Sam Thuesen and Dennis Aprill, both outdoorsmen, conservationists and educators who had a keen interest in the young people of the North Country.

Aprill wrote outdoors stories for the Press-Republican for many years before his death.

The scholarships are available to youths who live in Clinton, Essex, Warren, Washington, Hamilton or Franklin counties. Send a short one-page letter to Gretchen Comfort, 749 Norristown Road, Schuyler Falls, NY, 12985, telling her why you want to go to camp.

The deadline is March 31.

For more details, go to www.Dec.ny.Gov/education, or google "dec summer camps."
